As a result of rigorous grape selection and low yields, South Tyrol's native Lagrein grape variety has evolved into the province's top red wine. In the vineyard warm sandy soils are preferred, while in the cellar wood aging is essential for the Riserva. Only grapes grown in the Bolzano Valley Basin are used to make Lagrein Riserva. The result is a complex red color, seductive by its strong structure and varied flavors. The wine is blackish red. On the nose it has intense aromas reminiscent of cherries, blackberries and plums. On the palate, the wine is soft, complex and powerful. This Lagrein is recommended as a side dish with savory dishes such as braised beef cheek, grilled beef and game.
Sourced from selected vineyards in Gries, Leitach and Girlan, the grapes grow south, southeast to southwest. The terroir consists of moraine rubble. Convenient harvesting of the Lagrein takes place from the end of September. This is followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by approximately twelve months of development in barrique tonneaux with malolactic fermentation. After assembly, further maturation takes place in oak barrels.
