Wijnvignet – Ik weet wat van wijn

Would you like to understand wine better? Wonder why one wine tastes different from another and learn how to taste wine properly? Then our SDEN 1 wine course in The Hague is a great place to start. Over two relaxed and enjoyable lessons, we cover the basics of wine and, most importantly, taste plenty of it. You’ll discover how wine is made, which grape varieties and wine regions are important, and how climate and region influence the wine. Of course, you’ll also learn how to taste wine properly and what to look for.

You don’t need any previous knowledge of wine. The course is suitable for anyone who is curious about wine, whether you simply want to learn more for your own enjoyment or work with wine professionally. The lessons take place in our cosy tasting room behind the wine shop in The Hague. Our teachers are experienced wine advisers and registered vinologists who share not only what’s in the books, but also their own experiences from working with wine every day. We keep our groups small, leaving plenty of room for questions, conversation and, of course, tasting. You’ll taste 16 different wines in total, matched to the topics we cover, so you can experience the theory in the glass straight away. During the first lesson, you’ll receive the official SDEN course book ‘Ik weet wat van wijn’. You can use it to prepare for the nationally recognised SDEN 1 exam, which takes place at the end of the second lesson. The exam is not compulsory. Enjoyed the course and want to continue learning? You can move on to SDEN 2.

Please note: all lessons are taught in Dutch.

What will we explore?

  • What are the different parts of a grape?
  • Which important grape varieties should you know?
  • How are red, white, rosé, sparkling and fortified wines made?
  • How do you taste wine according to the SDEN method?
  • Where do the most important wines come from?
  • How do climate and region influence a wine?
  • How do you read a wine label?
  • What do all those wine terms and quality classifications mean?
  • How should wine be stored and handled?
  • What is the difference between aerating and decanting?
  • Which wines work well with different dishes?
  • What is the right serving temperature?
  • And of course: how can you get even more enjoyment from what’s in your glass?
