Autre Cru from Domaine Nowack is a modern grower Champagne from the region of Champagne, specifically the subregion Vallée de la Marne. The estate is run by Flavien Nowack, the latest generation of a family that has been producing wine since the 18th century. Since taking over the domaine, he has focused on crafting Champagne that expresses the character of the vineyards as clearly and naturally as possible.

The cuvée Autre Cru literally means “another terroir.” With this name, Nowack refers to grapes that come not only from his home village but from several carefully selected vineyards across the Marne Valley. By blending fruit from these different plots, the wine reflects a variety of soils and microclimates while maintaining balance and identity.

The wine is often made largely or entirely from Pinot Meunier, a grape variety widely planted in the Vallée de la Marne. For many years Meunier was considered less prestigious than Pinot Noir or Chardonnay, but producers like Nowack demonstrate how expressive and refined it can be when farmed and vinified with care.

In the cellar, Nowack follows a low-intervention philosophy. Fermentation typically occurs with indigenous yeasts, allowing the wine to develop a more natural and site-driven character. Many of the base wines ferment and age in oak barrels, which add subtle texture and complexity. The wine then undergoes the traditional second fermentation in bottle and spends an extended period aging on the lees, contributing to depth and structure.

Autre Cru is released as Extra Brut, meaning that only a very small amount of sugar is added after disgorgement. The dosage is usually around one gram per liter or even lower, keeping the style very dry and focused. This approach emphasizes purity, freshness, and the natural balance of the wine.

In the glass, Autre Cru is known for its lively acidity, fine mousse, and layered aromatics. Typical notes include green apple, citrus, stone fruit, and subtle brioche tones from lees aging. Beneath these aromas lies a gentle mineral and slightly saline character that reflects the soils of the Marne Valley.
