SPANISH TOPPERS

Few wines are as popular as the verdejo of Santa Cruz de Alpera. We sell boxes full of this top wine every day in our store on Fahrenheitstraat. Quality always comes to the surface and this verdejo - for which hardly any fanfare has been made - is living proof of this. Clear tropical hints like those of pineapple and mango characterize this verdejo and if you taste it you will also recognize notes of green apple and anise in it. This crisp wine drinks easily, but that does not mean that it has no aftertaste. A lot of bite, a lot of grip, a lot of filling, De Grote Hamersma rightly judged last year about this organic verdejo from the Spanish region of Almansa. Powerful, creaky and compact it even said in the report, with a 9- above it. Scores high as a cocktail wine, but it also works very well with paella, squid and soft whitefish for only 9.95 euros per bottle.
Bodega Santa Cruz de Alpera was founded in 1947 by 25 winegrowers from the municipality of Alpera, with the aim of defending the viability of the vineyards and what have they been doing with gusto ever since. The result is nothing but excellent wines. The monastrell roble from Santa Cruz was recently added to our range. This wine is distinguished by a subtle aroma of candied fruit mixed with a smoky background. On the palate, this wine is balanced, fresh, lively and flavourful with an appropriate acidity and noble tannins of ripe fruit. Ideal with stews, sirloin steak, pork belly, pasta with mushrooms, charcuterie and salted cheeses.
And then we haven't even mentioned the garnacha tintorera, the grape with which Santa Cruz is most popular. We have it for sale in several years: 2016, 2017 and 2018.
At the top of our bucket list is a trip to Bodega Santa Cruz de Alpera. We would have liked to have been there, but the corona measures in the Netherlands and in Spain are hindering our plans. It is an hour's drive from Alicante airport but you will pass an interregional border which is currently blocked. As soon as we can travel freely again, we will be the first to go to Bodega Santa Cruz because we want to know everything about the power, the secret behind this Spanish toppers.
